Texas City Church Teams with Middle School to Build "Garden of Hope"

After several weeks of preparation, St. George's, Texas City, and kids from the Blocker Middle School Garden Club planted seed in their community garden dubbed "The Garden of Hope."

The new garden initiative is just another cog in an ongoing effort at St. George's to reach out into the community and become a resource for their neighbors. In 2012, they launched the Kids Cooking Club, which teaches kids and their families how to prepare quality, healthy meals. Soon the cooking club will be able to use fresh vegetables from the Garden of Hope.

Blocker Middle School has long been the next door neighbor to St. George's, but the church had never found a way to connect with the students. The garden project has gives the students a positive after-school outlet and provides St. George's volunteers with an opportunity to mentor kids and be rejuvenated by their youthful spirits.

The Rev. Robin Reeves, rector, cites Jeremiah 29:11 when she interacts with the student. It reads "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to give you hope and a future."

"God has plans for these kids," Reeves said, "plans for a Hope for these kids and plans for a Future. And so do we!"
